You may get an error message when you export reports to Excel from QuickBooks for Mac if you are using the OSX Mavericks (10.9) or Yosemite (10.10) operating system. The message says: “Excel could not open [file name] because some content is unreadable. Do you want to open and repair this workbook? If Excel cannot repair the file, some data may be lost.” At this point you can click Open and Repair, and you have the option to save a log file. Some repaired reports have the original data intact, and some are missing information.

To avoid this problem, you can click the QuickBooks menu at the upper left, then Preferences. Click Reporting, then set “Export Report As” to “SYLK for Microsoft Excel 2004.” The exported report may have the font set to white for the header information, but you can change the color manually and the rest of the data will be intact.
