HOW it began
Our story begins with our founder, Burton Li. Like many working in the nonprofit world, Burton’s roots are in activism, and he wanted to find a way to make the biggest impact. His path led him to working as a bookkeeper for nonprofits (while also pursuing his passion for music). Over time, the bookkeeping picked up and he needed to hire some help, which led to the birth of Sutro Li in 2009.
As Sutro Li grew
The more the firm grew, the clearer it became: finance people who really get the non-profit space are a rare breed. Few truly understand or relate to the mission of creating impactful change, unless they already have their feet planted in the cause. Co-founder, Trupti Li, saw a chance to bring on board people who shared their passion, while also lifting up a community close to her heart.
sutro li india is born
Trupti was focused on how the expanding needs of our clients could provide opportunities to her community in India. Every start-up needs a little luck. Trupti was introduced to an old family friend in India, Captain Ajay Badamikar, who wanted to start an accounting operation. A partnership was struck and Sutro Li India opened its doors in 2016, right in Trupti's hometown of Pune. We've built a reputation for pioneering a workplace that respects all, champions women’s advancement, and offers real-world learning experiences to the next generation through local university partnerships.
Today
Sutro Li helps multiple missions combat issues such as hunger, anti-war, and homelessness, and supports the arts and education among many other great causes.
